This initiative not only fosters essential skills but also creates employment opportunities in the region’s booming construction industry, addressing the demand for skilled labor.

LaGrange, Georgia

Goodwill Career Center in LaGrange has recently celebrated the graduation of 19 participants from its Construction Ready program, which equips individuals with essential skills for Georgia’s rapidly growing construction sector.

Program Overview

The Construction Ready program, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1993, is dedicated to training individuals for well-paying, entry-level construction jobs. This initiative allows participants to build a future without the burden of student loan debt. During a comprehensive 20-day training period, attendees learned vital skills in hand tools, power tools, print reading, and construction math. They also earned seven certifications, including the industry-standard OSHA 10-hour training, basic laser training, and power tool training.

Funding and Support

The training was made possible through a generous donation from author and philanthropist MacKensie Scott, facilitated by Goodwill, which also hosted the sessions. This program aligns with Goodwill’s broader efforts in career support, including case management, resume writing, and professional skills training. Plans for future expansion include welding and additional training programs.

Since 2014, the Construction Ready program has trained and graduated a total of 2,086 students, boasting a 95.5% job placement rate. Typically, students secure employment through a reverse job fair where companies meet with them; however, all 19 graduates from this cohort independently found jobs, highlighting their initiative and the program’s overall effectiveness.
